Coat Colour Genetics
This seminar is about the genetics of coat colours in dogs. The aim of this seminar is to teach you the basics of colour genetics so that in the future you will already have an idea of which colours to expect based on the abbreviations.
We discuss the coat colours that can be tested by Embark in Wolfdogs and Wolfalikes, their effect on other colours and how to determine the phenotype from the genotype.
We start with the definition of basic terms that are relevant for the course of the seminar.
Based on this, we will deal with the origin of coat colours and how the loci interact with each other.
Using a chart, we learn how the loci relate to each other and in which order they must be considered in order to correctly determine the phenotype based on the genotype.
When we are done with that, I will refer to each individual locus and its allele combination again and explain to you with the help of graphics how these affect the coat colour of the dog.
After that, we will look at the chart from the beginning again in reverse order and learn how far the genotype can be determined in theory from the phenotype. Finally, we will look at a few unknown and previously unsolved phenomena in colour genetics.
