Wolfalike or Wolflookalike is a collective term for all dogs that look like a wolf, without necessarily having any actual wolf in them. Wolfalikes can therefore be any dog that looks like a wolf. It does not matter for the designation whether it is a purebred or a mixed breed.
The basic idea of a wolfalike is a dog that visually resembles a wolf without also having the character traits associated with a wolf. Most wolfalikes are therefore crossbreeds of wolf-like dog breeds such as Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes or German Shepherds, but these breeds can also count as wolfalikes. Wolfalikes, unlike wolfhounds, do not have to have any wolf content, but wolfdogs may have been used in their creation. Typical wolfalikes are the breeds mentioned above, as well as Northern Inuits and Tamaskans.
Wolfalikes vary in temperament from dog to dog due to the different breed compositions, and there can even be massive differences within a litter. For purebred dogs that are defined as wolfalike, the character of the respective breed is crucial. When mixing different dog breeds, the range of character traits that can be expected is significantly greater. Accordingly, it is important to be well informed about the pedigree of a puppy.
In general, Wolfalikes should be uncomplicated, original dogs with an adaptable, stress-resistant character.
Wolfalikes vary in appearance from dog to dog due to the different breeds involved. Even within the same litter, there can sometimes be massive differences. Generally speaking, they should resemble a wolf at first glance. Due to the various crossbreeds of dog breeds and their genetics, there are wolfalikes that look more or less like wolves. Often wolfalikes have a wolf-grey, black or white colouring, light eyes and a sporty, slender build.
Since there are no uniform rules for health examinations of wolfalikes or a common point of contact for the documentation of illnesses, little is known about the general health of all wolfalikes. Any disease that can occur in the crossed breeds can also occur in the respective wolfalike. Unfortunately, not all wolfalike breeders take this issue seriously and test their dogs.
They do not normally require any special care other than regular brushing when they are moulting.
